NFT quickly went mainstream last year and is now traded on major auction houses generating hundreds of millions of dollars in transaction volume every month.
Melania Trump to Auction off Hat With Physical and Digitized NFT Drawings
According to an announcement on Tuesday, former U.S. first lady Melania Trump announced that she will be auctioning a famous white hat she wore in 2018, accompanied with physical and digitized NFT drawings.
These three “important and unique signature projects” commemorate the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Washington in April 2018 – for the first time during the Trump presidency.
The auction item, named “Collection of State Heads”, will be held online from January 11th to 25th using the Solana (SOL) cryptocurrency.
According to the website that announced the auction, bids start at $250,000, which is currently 1,416 SOL.
The French-American designer Herve Pierre made this wide-brimmed hat at the request of Mrs. Trump, which Mrs. Trump wore when she accompanied the French first lady Brigitte Macron on a tour of Washington.
The autographed collection also includes physical and digital paintings of Trump in a hat, all created by French artist Marc-Antoine Cullon.
The announcement stated that “a portion” of the proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for foster children to learn computer skills.
Trump’s office did not immediately respond to an email from AFP asking for the size of the portion that will be donated.
The Former U.S. First Lady Launches Her Own Platform
In her first public project after leaving the White House, Trump announced last month that she would join the crypto trend by launching her own platform to sell NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
Trump said in a statement, “I am proud to announce my new NFT project, which reflects my passion for art and will support my ongoing commitment to children through my Be Best initiative.”
“Through this new technology-based platform, we will teach children computer science skills, including programming and software development, so they can thrive after they leave the care community.”
With the blockchain technology behind cryptocurrency, NFT turns everything from illustrations to memes into virtual collectibles that cannot be copied.
Trump’s first NFT was a watercolour of her blue eyes – also created by Coulon – entitled “Melania’s Vision”.
This painting was available to purchase for 1 SOL before the end of the year, which was about $150 at the time.
